If you're looking to know your London Dry from your Navy Strength or Old Tom and need some help choosing from the thousands of gins out there... GreatGins might just be the tonic.

Marmalade might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of gin, but once you’ve tried Zymurgorium Marmalade Manchester Gin, it’s all you’ll be able to think about.

ZYMUR…WHAT?

Don’t worry, it won’t be a word that you’ll have come across before. A zymurgorium, as the brand’s website helpfully explains to us, is an emporium that specialises in zymurgy (which is the study of scientific brewing). Essentially, they sell a lot of alcohol. In all different flavours.

It’s the brainchild of Aaron Darke, who spent a lot of time brewing for his friends at uni. This might not sound particularly interesting, but Aaron didn’t settle for using an at home brew kit, instead he foraged for ingredients himself and made his own spirits.

FLAVOURS GALORE

Out of this, we now have the Zymorgoium, which might be a bit of a mouthful but is very intriguing once you get into it. They create a wide range of different gins, gin based liqueurs and vodkas, each brighter and more loudly packaged than the next. It’s like a rave in a distillery.

They have every flavour imaginable, and a few that aren’t This includes, Realm of the Unicorn and Mandarin Dynasty, whatever that might mean. They also have a lot of more normal sounding flavours, like Cherry, chocolate and raspberry (we cannot stress enough that this is only the tip of the iceberg, there are a lot of different flavours going on here and it is well worth taking a look).

ZYMURGORIUM MARMALADE MANCHESTER GIN

We’ve decided to stick with a relatively normal sounding gin to review, and we’re glad we did. This is a really great gin. It’s easy going and full of flavour, but not overwhelming. It’s also a Manchester Gin, which is part of a new category that’s rising up in the recent boom in gin popularity. More gins are being recognised as regional categories, creating new types of gin separate from the typical London Dry.

TASTING NOTES FOR ZYMURGORIUM MARMALADE MANCHESTER GIN

Bottle cost: £24.96

The nose begins with notes of orange and juniper. The sweetness of the orange is excellent against the slightly bitter notes of the juniper. It is not overpowering, but complex and really delicious.

The palate is equally good, with lots more orange and tangerines, giving off a lovey citrus tang. The juniper and other botanicals create a subtle backdrop the brings in a lovely tart, earthy note.

The finish is bold and full of juniper.

After trying this, we will definitely be back to the Zymurgorium to try more intriguing concoctions and maybe find out what Realm of the Unicorn means.
