What started as a rather quaint foray into the world of liqueurs, 6 O’clock Gin is taking charge and showing many of the big brands how it’s done.
Sometime in the 1980s Edward Bramley Kain and his partner Patricia Gage began experimenting with they fruits they grew on their farm, turning them into liqueurs.
Based in Devon, they owned a fruit farm that produced strawberries, blackcurrants and raspberries. From these they began to make some pretty impressive fruit liqueurs.
Their liqueurs grew in popularity and they eventually introduced a Sloe Gin to the range.
Due to their great success, they decided to make it a full time endeavour, and bought a larger facility where they could bottle and make their own spirits on a bigger scale.
Eventually it came time for them to retire, and their son Michael and daughter Felicity could not see the family business sold.
They bought it themselves and have turned it into a thriving family run business, with many new products including a London Dry Gin.
Today they are quickly rising up the ranks of UK spirits producers and have an impressive awards cabinet to prove it.
Their 6 O’clock Gin is made with a variety of botanicals, including juniper, orris root, angelica, coriander, winter savory, orange peel and elderflower.
The nose is packed with lots of elderflower and citrus flavours. This is a very classic Gin, with all the pine aromas of juniper coming out, but a lovely burst of elderflower to give it a refreshing feel.
The orange peel melts into the background and really lets the elderflower bounce off it.
The palate is typical of a well-crafted London Dry. It has lots of coriander and juniper, giving it a lovely earthy and sweet flavour.
These go perfectly with the citrus fruits and elderflower, making for a aromatic and well rounded Gin.
It finished with yet more elderflower intertwined with a dash of coriander and juniper.
This is quite a Gin to behold and is reminiscent of truly classic Gins that have gone before it. if you’re looking for a spirit that really captures what a good Gin is, then this is the one for you.
